Caning was the natural order at my all boys boarding school. Cane first, questions afterwards, some just 'there and then' others more ritualised. Six strokes was the minimum, twelve was not uncommon and yes, the marks lasted two or three weeks, but that didn't prevent a repeat caning if it had been earned. In fairness, there were other punishments too, but caning was the usual default. Unlike you, John, I retained a need to be caned into adulthood and was never interested in caning others, male or female. At home, though, we were chastised in the family room, always bare, and always very hard... no differentiation by gender, only by age and misdemeanour
