I Hate When Teachers Do This
My first teaching job was teaching in Juvenile Hall Boys School in downtown Los Angeles. All my friends warned me it could be dangerous.
They were right.
On my second day of teaching, I was assaulted, and was threatened with death. The exact words were, "I AM GOING TO KILL YOU!!!" Fortunately, the assistant principal spotted the attack and grabbed my attacker as I backed off. I had a bruise on my neck for a week. It was very startling, frightening and completely unexpected...
Because it was a teacher!
During my 15 years working there, I never got attacked again. In fact, I got along pretty well with the students. I was never even threatened by a student.
The teacher had become upset because while I had taken over her classroom for an hour (she had a meeting), one of her students had written an obscene word on the wall in her classroom; following school protocol, I had him taken out of the classroom and wrote a report on him. A VERY common situation in this school. Other than that, the class had been no problem.
The teacher had tenure so she got in no trouble. Several probation staff, and several students saw the attack. She had run down the hall toward me screaming death threats, then flung herself on me putting her hands around my neck and throttling me. She was a small short skinny woman in her late middle years and my main fear was that I would hurt her by detaching her from me. I had had a lot of training in self defense over the years and could have easily defended myself. It was fortunate that the assistant principal was only a few feet away and he moved fast. He grabbed her around the waist and lifted her off the ground pulling her off me and dragged her kicking and screaming into his office. Through the glass wall of his office, I could see him pushing her into a chair and holding her in the chair with his arms on either side of her holding the chair.
What an experience.
I hate it when that happens.
