I Believe Some Things Exist Whether You Believe In Them Or Not

Yesterday a Great man was laid to rest
A man you never heard preach ,but you just knew he loved God .
The man never met a stranger ,always speaking to everyone ,
and don't let him get you cornered if you talked against the country he loved .
God help you if you told him there was no work to be found .
This man with his old truck and a work box full of tools worked harder then any man I ever knew ,and I have known some real men in my day .
They used to say my Grandpa's served their countries back when ships were made of wood and men were steel .
Men who never knew what the word quit meant .
In his 80's ,late 80's ,up at sunrise off to meet his friends at Hardee's for breakfast ,,shoot the breeze as he called it and off to work .
Some elderly person who's car wouldn't run ,or to fix a water leak and even take on some major remodels .
During a hurricane ,the man behind us ,his home was cut into by a fallen tree .
As soon as my Uncle noticed it he was there making sure everyone was OK and soon back with tarps and materials to get this family back in their home .
Daily at dark someone showed up looking for him (no need to look for him while the sun was shining ,he was working somewhere )
So many families he helped ,,and his own family ,,the number is huge as to all the people he helped .
Food ,working on their cars ,taking people to work (until he helped them get a car )
All of the young adults and kids the past few days have told story after story as to how when the fair came to town he was getting all the kids together and take them to the fair and pay for their admission ,buy the bracelet that allowed them to ride all the rides .

He quit school at a young age to work as many men did in his day ,but like me he was hell bent on seeing others took advantage of school and to work hard for scholarships (many of our family members now have gone on to college on scholarships they worked hard for ,but little did they know men like my uncle was the one behind the scenes making sure they had everything they needed to succeed ,,books ,supplies ,clothes ,warm coats and jackets ,and food on the table so they were not paying attention to an empty stomach ,but the work at hand ,and glasses too if they needed glasses ,,,few ever knew santa clause came to their homes more times a year then just Christmas .

He worked his way up through the Chrysler Corporation and was held back from many jobs due to the lack of a diploma so he went to night school and got the piece of paper they needed so bad ,Nothing was holding this old man back NOTHING ,,,
SO he retired with enough money even Christ could hit him up for a loan or a donation .
He was good to do that too ,make contributions no one knew about ,,
The Church's and Christan Service Centers ,and he know a lot of very wealthy men
he was good about getting them to chip in too ...but you never ever heard him brag once about all he did for people .

He would say "Going to earn a loaf of bread come go with me "
If you were able bodied ,but refused to work ,you knew where he stood
"You can eat on the porch this time ,my daughter will bring you a plate ,
but lay around and expect someone to support and feed you ?
My Bible says "If a man won't work ,He's not to eat ,,Find something ,or don't drag up here again looking for a hand out ,,the Lord and I help those who "TRY" to help themselves .He did not cotton to men able bodied not working ,
(until he seen my medical records he questioned me a few times as to why I only worked when I wanted to but not all the time (A man with all your skills should have no problem working everyday )and until he was hit by a tractor trailer and his spine injured
I think he still was disappointed that I only worked when I felt able to compete the job and I worked for a lady that let me work at my own pace ,so I was working nights when he was asleep and sleeping when he thought I should be working ,but when he came to see the house I just built ,He told me he was sorry for judging me "Sorry ",I was not living up to my potential ,but he reeled it in and I gained his respect ,I was not as lazy as he assumed ,,and after getting hit by the truck ,he really understood ,
when your spine is compromised you don't just shake it off ,do a few stretch's and a few push ups and go on to work .

The rig hitting him was the beginning of his end ,it killed him slowly ,not as it almost did at the time of the accident ,( am driver texting instead of watching the road )
Once his spine was damaged and he was unable to adapt ,it just took him down .
I work around my pain ,I take it easy when I can't go ,and work hard when I can .
(We are alot alike as to who we help and the work we did ,we both loved to work )
But he was get up and go or life was just not worth living ,,
So having to face the way he did things before was not the way he could do them now was just to much on him ,and he began to decline ,depressed not wanting to get out of bed .
I guess his "If a man won't work he don't eat applied to him too "
He stopped eating ,started letting people do for him (and he hated that )
And he just went down hill

The Va come and did a big memorial for him (he was a decorated Vet )
A military funeral ,,and so many people ,,it was huge
So if Heaven is real (And he and I both believe it is )
I will see him again ,,
Brooks and Dunn "I believe " will now remind me of my Uncle
if there ever was a man deserved a ticket to the other side
it was that sweet old man that looked me in the eye and said
"Off to earn another loaf of bread "
Sleep well my old friend ,,when the trump blows ,well meet again

now I have to wipe my eyes ,blow my nose and quit crying
He lived life on his terms ,,we don't get a choice how we die if were Gods
He was ,,He will be missed [youtube=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X5z-jjWyAJQ]

I'm sorry for your loss. It sounds like he left quite a legacy. Men like that are rare these days. I hope you find some solace in the knowledge that you will see him again.

@SW-User I do ,we talked sometime back when he knew he was on the down hill slide (he kept it from us he had cancer, the wreck just sped his decline up )
I got to hug his neck and we both cried as he told me how proud of me he was and he never regretted renting me the home I live in now .
He was also my landlord and neighbor 22 years ,just a driveway between us .
Many nights we sat on his porch and he told me how happy he was I was here and how proud he was of his nieces ,then his nephew my son .
So that was one of our last real conversations ,
When he gets to the cloud ,tell them to move over ,I'll be right there too .
And I know everyone will want to shake his hand when he reach's the Holy City .
He was a very loved man .
Thanks for your kindness
God bless

@rckt148 Those are priceless memories. It's clear that you were just as much of a blessing to him as he was to you. What a gift!

This was a beautiful piece to honor the man and his life. His life made the world a better place.
