Form teachers knew their pupils best though; they knew who they could whack hard, and who the unpopular pupils were that the class hoped to see with their bottoms sticking up!

@ThatMusgraveWoman I had a slightly different experience. Aged 9 I was something of a goody-goody and teacher’s pet. In my end of term report my form master described me as a “model pupil”. Early next term he found an excuse to whack me, in the gym with the rest of the class lined up to watch. According to spectators, I got it harder than the other three boys who were whacked at the same time.

@MartinII I can imagine the teacher's glee at finally finding an excuse to whack you. Some teachers were indeed nasty.

@ThatMusgraveWoman To be fair, I’m not sure he was really nasty. I think he enjoyed spanking me, but then I preferred the whacking to a detention.

@MartinII I think most pupils would have preferred a slippering to detention - not a caning though. That was on a different level.
