I had the slipper (actually a plimsoll) three times in school and it hurt like hell. The last time was six of the best from our PE teacher for swearing, and she whacked me across my PE pants. That was the point I decided that I wasn’t going to risk getting it again.

@Karene PE teachers were notorious for giving the slipper. Mine was always looking for and finding reasons to slipper us.

@Sharon mine was the same Sharon, horrible lady, who liked shouting at us like we were useless and no hesitation in resorting to the plimsoll.

@Karene Ours didn't do much shouting, she spoke with her slipper. It wasn't unusual for her to slipper the whole class. She also often waited at the gate to slipper anyone who was late.

The boys' gym master was quite easy going compared to her.

@Sharon We has a few right nasty ones and none took what I’d describe as academic subjects. The needlework teacher slippered for the slightest thing, like talking in class and in home economics (cookery) the teacher we had slapped and used a wooden spatula.

@JoBlak My school was mixed and our gym mistress was far worse than the boys' gym master when it came to deploying the slipper.

@Denise61 Yes, several times. I got the slipper off the boys' gym master but far more of off the gym mistress. The boys got it more off her too.
