I Will Tell You Something Random About Myself

.

The strangely random things we think about are so surprising, sometimes.

This afternoon, I had a random memory pop into my head, seemingly from nowhere.

When I was a child, one of my proudest moments was when my parents decided I was responsible enough to use the cook stove, unsupervised. The first thing I learned was how to boil water. Huge achievement when you are eleven. Then they allowed me to make Coffee, which required only boiling the water and carefully pouring it into mugs. They drank instant, making it simple.

I knew exactly how each of them liked their coffee. I had learned that mom liked hers with a rounded teaspoon of instant coffee powder and a bit of sugar; less than half a spoon.
Dad liked his with a scant teaspoon of coffee and two spoons of sugar and a generous amount of milk; approximately two and a half ounces. Easy. I know how much milk by the colour. If there wasnt enough, I added a dribble more. If it was too light, I simply said 'sorry I added too much' and he drank it anyway.

So, for nearly a year, everything was fine. I enjoyed this little job.

Then one day, my dad noticed he was putying on some unwanted weight. He decided that cutting out all that sugar and milk in his ten or more cups of coffee each day would be a good place to start his diet.

He came home that evening and when it came time for the adults to retire to the livingroom to watch television, I offered coffee as I did each evening. Mom said yes and dad said yes, but he said, "I'm on a diet so, make mine black"

I tried. You know? I really did. But no matter how many extra spoons of coffee I added, that coffee stayed brown.

I took it to him, and as he took his first sip, I apologized for the fact that it was still brown even though I used nearly the rest of the coffee in the jar. He spewed out that first sip, just as I finished my heartfelt apology.

Poor Daddy. I feared he would never trust me to make coffee for him again. But he did, he was just careful for a while to remind me that black just meant with no milk or sugar.

We laughed about that brown coffee for years.
