I Am Easily Startled

I can tell you that I startle easily, but chances are, you won't be able to understand just how easily I can be startled.

Doesn't sound like a big deal, and it wouldn't be, if this happend every now and then. It is extremely embarrassing! Somebody puts something down on a table hastily, and I flinch violently while simultaneously letting out a short scream. The louder and more abrupt the sound, the more exaggerated the flinch and the louder the screech.

Even if I know a sound is coming, I am completely powerless to stop it. One time, someone was throwing those little popping pieces of paper with gun powder in them. I jumped, grabbed my chest and screamed. Everyone laughed, then laughed when I did it again, and again... Finally I had to apologize and explain how I startle easily. I thought I could resist if I kept saying don't scream, don't scream over and over, but even that didn't work! It was less severe of a reaction, but still embarrassing!
Lol! Girl, me too! I jump and squeal, close my eyes and it's embarrassing. Yesterday, 2 young men startled me as I came out of the elevator and I jumped and squealed. One guy couldn't help but laugh at me (he was the cuter of the two)... I was in my thoughts and out of nowhere they came out of the double doors.

One time, a doctor asked me if I was in an abusive relationship to be so stratled like I am.... I've never been, but I'm always "scared" of something bad happening and catching me by surprise.

I WAS in an abusive relationship! I never would have put that together! I thought I had some neuromuscular or central nervous system disease! Thanks for sharing :-) that doctor didn't happen to tell you how to make it stop did he?
@Typicalpisces no, he didn't. He just told me that I should get therapy .....
he's right.... I should.

Ps
I'm glad you've come out of that unhealthy relationship:>
