I Met Someone Famous

I had an interesting encounter with fame once.

I've been to four pop concerts in my life. And three of them were for a local group called Smokie... as in the song "Living next door to Alice".

My claim to fame is that I called one of em Dad.

There I was at their concert in the Bradford Alhambra theatre trying to make my way to the bar at half time when I noticed a little lass too young to get in stood by the door trying to attract the attention of a bloke near the bar. She was shouting "Dad!" but he couldn't hear her. So I made my way to the bar and looked at her and pointed to the bloke in front of me and she nodded "Yeah him!".

So I taps him on the shoulder and said "Hey Dad, you're wanted" and pointed toward the kid.

"Cheers Mate" he said and toddled off to see what sort of pop she wanted.

It was only Smokie's bloody bass player wasn't it!

It woulda been an ever better story if I could remember his name. 🥴

Dad is the one on the left. 😁

Geraldo Rivera stood behind us in line for Terminator 2.
Ted Kennedy told me hours of stories about how where we were standing used to be the bar.
Billy Joel gave me his autograph because my supervisor was too chicken to ask for it.
I gave Charles Bronson my autograph, pointing out, "You probably get sick of giving everyone yours, so have mine." He laughed.
Alex Trebek asked me how to get to the First Class Lounge
Sinbad and I told jokes while my stoned co-worker could only say to him, "you so fine."
Ray Charles was very nice as I took him to make his connection.

You see a lot working in an airport.

@ThePerfectUsername If you just act like they're regular people, they seem to love you.

When Bronson walked up to our counter, I just said, "Hi Mr. Bronson, what can I do for you."
I obviously recognized him but wasn't making a big deal about it.
