I Think Mean People Suck

This is about something more than mean and also less than mean.

It's about people who are detestable and some who just make me shake my head.

Item 1) in the retirement apartment building where I live, there is a non denominational chapel on the top floor. Being a devout Apathetic Agnostic, I don't attend services, but I like the fact that it is there for the people who want it.

The local community centre has kindly loaned the pastor of this "church" a microphone and an amplifier, until they can afford to buy their own, hopefully after one more fundraiser.

Each Sunday, after services, the mic and amplifier get put in a cupboard and the cupboard is locked. Two weeks ago,,that cupboard was broken open and the mic and amp were stolen. There is a security camera just outside the chapel, but not inside. And none in the stairwells at all. Someone of indeterminate gender and wearing bulky clothes, including a hoodie, was seen entering the chapel, but not leaving. Presumably the person used the stairs.

This could be a stranger who just happened to break into the only cupboard with anything valuable in it; but I don't think so. It feels wrong. This feels like it had to be someone who attends services, or at least a guest of a resident who went to chapel with them on a Sunday morning or attended one of the hymn sings, during the week.

This type of person is detestable.

Item 2) my granddaughter just started a new job. She has to leave for work at 6:00 am and her kids don't leave for school until 8:30 am. She asked me if I would mind going to her place and see to it that they got up and dressed, had breakfast, and got to school on time. I said sure. $25:00 a week buys you a nanny. I'm a nana, already, but the $25.00 a week is for getting up in the dark and travelling an hour and a half to do a two hour job.

So, today was day one of my new routine. While waiting for my bus, in the cold and windy snow, before sunrise, a young man came dashing up and said he just came from some corner quite a distance away, to get to this bus shelter to ask if anyone had money for a coffee. I said yes, and handed him two dollars. He then explained that he comes to this shelter because this is where the nicest people live. Sweet boy. I told him to go get his coffee and get warm.

After he left, the other person who had been waiting for a bus, with me, asked if I had change for a coffee. I said no, because I gave it to the first young man who asked for change. This second one shrugged and said
"Fine. Keep it. I have plenty of my own" and he took out a change purse and shook it to show how much he had. It sounded like he wasn't lying. He had lots of something in that change purse. He just thought, I would give him some too, if I was going to give money away.

This type of person just makes me shake my head in wonder at the audacity.

Yup. I'm with you. Both of these people are detestable.

And, as a 21 year old girl who had many many mornings with one or the other of my grandmothers ensuring my brother and I were off to school on time, thank you! Your grandkids will have found memories of laughing with you in the morning before school. This is a good thing you are doing for them. 馃

Thank you for those kind words. I love kids. Especially mine.

I have done this before for other grandkids. These kids are actually my great grandkids. I was thrilled when my granddaughter said the kids were excited about it being their great grandmother who'd be there for them. And we did have a great time today. I'm looking forward to doing it each day. I'm looking forward to getting a routine in my life again. Since I retired, I have fallen into a rut of sleeping three or four hours in the day time and seven or eight at night. That's not even healthy. Far too much sleep.
