We tried rolling our skirts to make them as short as possible, much to the displeasure of the staff. If caught, a whack or two on the behind with a slipper was not unusual! The pain of fashion! 😄

Back in the early 90s I worked with a woman in her mid-30s, who once told me that every morning they had to kneel down on a long mat in the school playground in front of the Headmistress, and any girl whose skirt didn't touch the ground got sent to wait outside her office.

When her older sister first attended the same school, the Headmistress used to first walk up and down the line with a mirror on a stick, in order to make sure the girls were wearing their regulation knickers... my colleague was very relieved that they stopped that before she got there.
