I Watch The Show American Pickers

I am totally hooked on Mike and Frank. They seem to have carried their friendship into doing a business that they both enjoy.

I caught the picking bug one morning driving down a street and noticed some twind bed head boards out on the street for collection on dump day. I had to stop, and loaded into my SUV, and was able to resell them that saturday at my yard sale.

That was ok but then I began to answer ads for garage sales, and in fact, two other men and myself had a side job emptying out garages and attics and paying a flat rate. So far, so good, not making fantastic money, but I 'm learning and having lots of fun.

The most fun is searching through abandoned houses that I get persmission to through by the owners. There is where you find all kinds of furniture, knick-knacks, old magazines and newspapers, and family photos.

When I find items set out on the street for collections, I often knock and ask if they any other items for free or for sale. They almost alwaya let me in and show me around. I'm getting better at negotiating often do better grouping items for one price - a methhod used by Frank on American Pickers.

In the past year I started having Saturday yard sales in my garage. I post an ad in Craigslist and I usually get 20 to 30 people show up.

most of the items they find I have no interest .. I target used furniture which seems to tell to a variety of people.
Midnightblu · 56-60, F
Last night Mike and Frank visited Newport, Rhode Island and snapped up some chandelies and and other architectural items from one of the mansions there..

I toured there a few years ago and it was quite interesting ...

I find it interesting sometimes, mainly to see the old crap they find. As to paying what they ask for the stuff in their store, NO WAY!
Midnightblu · 56-60, F
I hardly ever look in their store .. i gues it take a certain person to buy an item ..
MsLibrarian · 31-35, F
I love their show and have learned a lot I would never have known by watching it.

We should work together 😎
I work with a realtor
Doing the dirty job around the house
You are right
It's fun
Some of these places belonged to passed away people
And it looks like the house wasn't cleaned ever
Until they died 💀
Midnightblu · 56-60, F
good idea . . .
ChipmunkErnie · 70-79, M
Yes, used to love PAWN STARS because of the things people brought in. But, except for Rick, the family are definitely people I'd avoid in real life, particularly since Chumlee was busted on sex charges?
Midnightblu · 56-60, F
I can't get into Pawn Stores .. they carry Chumley just for entertainment .. although I feel for the guy . . . Chumlee is a lot smarter than he lets on, and I think he needs a career change -- away from PAWN Stars !
aradia11 · 61-69, F
I like the show would love to have the knowledge to do it for a living. I can only watch so much TV. Since my husbsnd is partly disabled he watches tons if TV..
I diblove the old Cars.Harleys. n furniture.
Midnightblu · 56-60, F
sorry to hear about your husband .. I started with small items.. much easier to work with .. .
Midnightblu · 56-60, F
that's a good point .. they're not into restoring .. Frank took a loss on a car he bought ... I would like to see some items they have sold from picks .....
marvingaye · 56-60, M
Oh geez. Please don't tell me you're more like Frank - that cheap bastard ;)
aradia11 · 61-69, F
Hahaha my husband says the same of Frank
Midnightblu · 56-60, F
Frank seems to like toys -- and motorcycles ..
CdAshley · 51-55, M
I use to go with my father picking and we also refinished old furniture and resell them. Learned a lot from him.
This is definitely something I would love to get into but never really knew where to start. The biggest thing I think is figuring out a reliable way to sell things otherwise you could end up in a situation where people start wondering if you are a hoarder and well you need to sell stuff to make it viable.
Midnightblu · 56-60, F
I can't overfill my garage, otherwise it overflows outside or encroaches on my workshop. I mainly collect furniture right now .. couches are iffy .. depending condition. Some charity shops don't accept stuffed furniture to mold or insects living inside.
I avoid mattresses for the same reason, but frames are a hot item.

I also do well with small tables, and lamps !! Lamps really move especitally if you can clean them up. I often find new lamp shades for $1 at a local salvation army. They come and go since stores get up "lots" of item.

I don't make a lot right, but I hate seeing anything thrown away that is useful.
@Midnightblu: Cool. I would love to chat with you and maybe get some pointers. :)

lasergraph · 70-79, M
They are pretty nuts over signs and old bikes and cars. I see some historical things I recognize once in a while.
Midnightblu · 56-60, F
@lasergraph OMG is right, it sounds exactly the same .. I sold my table and chairs for $175 dollars and would have fetched more If I had time to replace the cushions. A man down said you can make platform that you can remove and replace with time. I must have had about 40 responses in two hours.

PBS did a show following the latest series of the Midwives Tales or what ever it is called. They go to great pains imiate ther various living spaces in 50s decor.

It was also the age where electrical appliances were being introduced, many were dangerous and caused fire and electocution.
lasergraph · 70-79, M
@Midnightblu Those tables were pretty common then, you didn't see much in the way of long wooden tables, they were too expensive. Naugahyde couches were common too. I don't know what a Naugha is but his hide is strange.
Midnightblu · 56-60, F
@lasergraph
Naugahyde: "an artificial material designed to resemble leather, made from fabric coated with rubber or vinyl resin."

Did you mean long traditional wooden diing tables?

Another thing, places like Goodwill or Salvation army won't accept stuffed furniture due dust, dirt, and mold in the fibre. Solid wood furniture sells well, even one that needs work sells as a fairly easy refurbishing job.
nudistsueaz · 61-69, F
I love that show too
aradia11 · 61-69, F
@midnightvI grew up in that area Newport Aquidneck Island I so miss it in the Sumner.. One of these days preferable my May I need to go back visit family...got some baggage now so notveasy..and yes you can find some interesting stuff too
Bluesky52 · 61-69, M
my wife watches it,we go to flea markets,i dont like the way they barter prices, they should respect the price given,
Midnightblu · 56-60, F
sometimes they take the asking price ..
the bartering is the fun part ..
and it adds suspence to the program of course !
then they drive off in their van with six items,
they have to budget the number of items per seller ..
@Bluesky52
Bluesky52 · 61-69, M
@Midnightblu I prefer respect for the given price,
bhatjc · 46-50, M
Eps is short for episodes. I hope that answers your question. I like that they pick stuff. But would like to see a follow thought. like it gets ether restored or sold to some one else.
aqua59 · 61-69, M
Love the show, but lately they focus too much on motorcycles. I find it interesting, yet I like the earlier shows which seemed to have more variety
bhatjc · 46-50, M
@midnight. I though you would have picked the area clean before they got their
Midnightblu · 56-60, F
not a chance . . .
bhatjc · 46-50, M
@Midnightblu: Your right. We can't taking everything. Besides what we see as trash. Some one will want as a treasure
Midnightblu · 56-60, F
Very True,

I collect mostly furniture ... I started picking things up on dump day ... while I was loading a chair one day, the owner of the house came out to talk. He said he had other to give you, and some though he wanted to sell.

So the picking for me begins when I can get into their garage or basement, and have them show me things. I have no idea how much they want so I ask for the price. If they're stumped, I throw a price that I think I can make a profit off of. Often, it is way too low and they either get cold feet or say they will think about it.

If you are stuck on an item, then quickly change the subject and look at something else you notice, even if you are not interested. Mike on Pickers does this a lot to release the pressure on the first item. Sometimes they will suddenly say "I'll pay your price on the first item." All you did was them some space to think on it.

I try to assure them that I hate to anything useful go unused.

As with MIke an Frank, they have have people don't to part with certain becasuse they're struck the sentimentalism (my new word) .. and then have a change of heart.

I told him I donate a lot of the items to lower income familes. And I often use them to stage a house with a few item so it doesn't look so bare. Some I take to Good Will only if they are usable and in good shape. The rest I sell at my Saturday garage sale .. where I open the garage door and haul it all out with help with the two men that help me on dump day.

I told the neighboors I would stick to 8 to 12 as my hours. Typically the real yard sale are there first thing, do a quick walk through and if they see anything that interests them, they leas immediatel.

Pickers usually learn over time what has value.

Anyway, I enjoy the people contact and I'm getting better at haggling over prices.

Midnightblu · 56-60, F
good for you .. I find moving sales have better items than yard sales .. I think people come down on price compared to grizzled veteran yard sale people .especially by the end of the day when they know they have to sell it or junk it ..
JakeShade · 61-69, M
Nice ms. Blu!

It sounds like you are making your "early" retirement into a lot of fun!
Midnightblu · 56-60, F
Fun happens !
bhatjc · 46-50, M
@Midnightblu: Sweet fun
Midlifemale · 61-69, M
I really like that. I started fixing up furniture myself. Usually changing the color and giving it a rustic distressed look
bhatjc · 46-50, M
I like the show to. But they need more eps. Where they get stuff they have picked restored
Midnightblu · 56-60, F
True, you don't see the sales after .. American Restoration is another show I like to watch .. I did sell a cast iron masonry tool of some sort that a man want to clean and restore ..
bhatjc · 46-50, M
@Midnightblu: I agree with you as well. I like American Restorations. But they never could keep it. They became like the pickers show as well. They should have just sticked to restoring the item and that was it. No other things.
MarineBob · 56-60, M
they were in my town a couple of month ago
Midnightblu · 56-60, F
did you have a chance to meet them ?
