I Love Sheep

We farmed Herdwick sheep for years, breeding them for sale into other flocks of the same breed as well as for meat. Of all the various breeds of sheep, we found Herdwicks the most interesting, living equally well on the lush grass in Surrey as they do in their normal native mountainous habitat of Cumbria.
I remember an old Cumbrian shepherd saying to me once that it must be a nightmare keeping them contained in our little fields in the south, given that they're used to running free on the Cumbrian hills and mountains. I told him that we'd never found it a problem to which he replied "Aha - that's what you think. The Herdwick is a very clever sheep. They'll be hopping over the fence when you go to bed and then hopping back in before you get up in the morning".
I was never able to disprove his theory, so who knows.

@robert...we gave some Herdwick wool to an old lady once and she knitted a jumper for her grandson - pure Herdwick and not blended! She showed it to us when it was finished and it looked fantastic, but I'm glad I didn't have to wear it.

But the Herdwick wool is a challenge. Even Beatrix Potter recognised that. Although I believe it can be blended.

They are incredibly hardy. I have encountered them on top of Great Gable and Hellvellyn

Must have been hard work to knot
