@SW-User It's non toxic and easily washes off, don't worry!

But sheep (and other animals) are numbered for different reasons, sometimes if several farmers graze herds together, so they can tell who belongs to whom - but it's also to identify which lambs belong to which mother. Sheep you may have noticed tend to look quite similar!

When a ewe and her young lambs get accidentally separated they raise a real cacophony until they are together again, so it definitely pays off!
