I Know the Meaning of My Name

My last name that is!

Thanks to my dad's vast knowledge of history and poking around in our ancestry, we know what our origins are behind my surname. It all started with the Roman Empire.

The Roman Empire ruled England for a while, which has pushed its original inhabitants north to what is now the southern region of Scotland. After the Roman rule, many medieval kingdoms emerged like the Wessex, Danes, ect... My kingdom of my ancestors were the Strathclyde Britons (Sorry babe, I ain't Saxon or Danish, but you'll see the irony behind my name shortly).

However, my last name emerged later when the Normans (French Vikings essentially because they were Scandinavian but conquered Normandy) would raid my Kingdom. My surname actually derives from Gaul (The land that consist of France and parts of Germany, also where the Normans originated from) not because I have roots there but because my Strathclyde Briton ancestors took parts of their language and incorporated them into English names.

My surname was granted to my ancestors by their occupation in the kingdom of Strathclyde. They were the king's archers, hunters, and law enforcers. They were actual warriors that scouted and protected the Kingdom's wilderness.

So, that definitely sets the standard and explains a lot. Lol
