Indigenous Child BC Canada

😞 When I heard this news last week I was heartbroken. No child should have to suffer being taken away. Having to change there way of life to others that dont approve. I hope that action will be taken to prevent any crimes happening to indigenous people.
There's a school less than a mile from my door that was established in 1890 with the goals of transforming Native American children into white children with dark skin.

Things have changed in the ensuing 130-odd years. The school Board of Directors is composed of the leaders of Pueblos, all Native Americans.
@Heartlander Not just west of the Mississippi. There was one in Carlisle, PA.

@Mamapolo2016 Thanks ... I just checked, and there were 100 such schools.

A sidetone of interest is that Jim Thorpe attended Carlisle and was part of their unstoppable football team that routinely beat their Ivy League opponents.
@Heartlander I just love it when that happens.

I lived in and around Carlisle half my life. Most everybody was proud of Jim Thorpe - after he was dead.

It happened en masse here in the US and also in Canada. There are still residential boarding school homes for American Indians in Oklahoma. My ex’s father lived in one after his father died.
The same thing was done to Native children in the U.S.
Children were taken from their families, their hair was cut, they were housed in these “schools”, forced to speak English only (and beaten if they were overheard speaking their tribal languages to each other). They were indoctrinated against their cultural and religious beliefs. With some tribes this was done for generations. The colonial system has much to answer for. 😞

@bijouxbroussard it's so sad. I hope it changes. But probably won't cuz some people will always see it as a problem. I think that the world would be boring and not as interesting if you didn't have different cultures.
@GreenNatured95 Not to mention that people have a right to their beliefs and cultures. The arrogance of the West to decide that everyone must live and believe as they do has been pretty shocking.

The worst part is this doesn't even surprise me. But it's so horrifying that I'm just kind of paralyzed.

@CountScrofula it's so sad. No one should be treated different.
Anglo-Gringos, even Canadians and Australians..love dehumanizing natives of all stripes. It still goes on today. Boarding "schools" were places of cultural extermination and god-knows what other abuses occurred in them.

Modern times have not gotten the attention of our souls, apparantly. Shames me to be human.
Did you force them do to something illegal
GreenNatured95 · 26-30, F
@littlepuppywantanewlife our government did
I didn't know about this
In history there was no mention of boarding schools.
@GreenNatured95 That's a huge mess. It's a big crime. All the tribes around the world are not safe I guess.
GreenNatured95 · 26-30, F
@littlepuppywantanewlife from the looks of it nope.

It is a terrible thing.
