Does love ultimately cause wayy more pain than pleasure? Or do the highs and lows balance each other out?

Love doesn't cause pain. It is when we perceive somebody is acting unloving toward us that we feel pain. Being as people are imperfect and can be selfish, we will experience behavior that is both loving and unloving. The hope is that the unloving behavior is minimal.
