Can someone explain...
I've been on and off this website for quite a bit. But I don't really understand the gifts? Are they just random?

No idea how they came up with them !
Points/tokens/coins whatever you want to call them are given for every question you answer and every question you ask.
As you amass them hopefully you’ll get to know a few folk along the way and if you want to give a gift you click on the username; go to their profile page; click on their ‘whiteboard’; click on‘Give a gift’; select gift; add a message; click done when you’re finished
