I Love Terry Pratchett Books

“And so the children of the revolution were faced with the age-old problem: it wasn't that you had the wrong kind of government, which was obvious, but that you had the wrong kind of people.
As soon as you saw people as things to be measured, they didn't measure up.”

-Terry Pratchett, Night Watch

he is the best! for such a genre writer, he often tells deep and wonderful things about real life humanity. working my way thru his entire list

@Amylynne Mhm! I almost have to disagree with you in that I'd say he's not a true genre writer - the genre is used to make his messages palatable. I'd say that's especially true with the Vimes books, my favorites.

@RemovedUsername8862 I said that to someone today. While he is classified in fantasy/fiction, that is the vessel that he uses to deliver is biting and brilliant critiques of social issues.

@wyolatex Especially with his later books! Thud, Unseen Academicals, Raising Steam, and Snuff pulled no blows.

@RemovedUsername8862 I think, besides Night Watch, Thud was one of my favorites.
RemovedUsername8862 · 26-30, M
@wyolatex Absolutely. Night Watch is my favorite, but Thud and Monstrous Regiment are close behind. Going Postal and Making Money, too.

@RemovedUsername8862 You have good taste! All of those are great works.

@wyolatex Thanks! Although, come to think of it, I really like the glimpse we get into Vetinari's worldview in Guards, Guards! Same with the glimpse that we get in I think it was Thud, where he remarks about seeing a mother and children eating mother and children.

@RemovedUsername8862 I was struck by that phrase as well. I am re-reading Unseen Academicals and love the take on organized sport and the social impact of popular culture.

@wyolatex Yeah! And I like how... old, I suppose, the cast of the UU felt in that book, as if the departure of the Dean was a sea-change for that entire group.

Mustrum is one of my favorite characters at UU, though I die every time they blow that magic whistle and it channels the demonic spirit of some long dead gym teacher!

@wyolatex Haha, that was hilarious! I really like the Bursar - I feel so bad for him, and I would feel bad for Ponder if I didn't feel like I'd hate him if I knew him in person.
