I Care About Homeless People

A story I'm proud of :)

It was around evening time. I was heading home from my university, but hadn't eaten anything all day. I didn't have a lot of money, but enough to buy myself my favorite meal, a Spicy Italian Sub. As I was making my way to Subway, I came across a homeless man, at a stoplight. He was holding up his homeless sign, doing his homeless thing. The light turned green and I pushed on the gas pedal. As I drove forward I glanced at him for a moment and he glanced at me back.

I arrived at the Subway and as I was getting out of my car, I thought about the homeless man. I didn't have enough to buy a 6 inch and a foot-long sub, so I would have to buy only 1 foot-long and give up half of my meal to him. I ordered it with double the meat so that it would be more filling for the both of us. When it was time to pay, I asked for a bottle of water and a large cup of coke (The large cup holds more than a bottle of coke). I thought about giving him the coke, as I believed someone struggling to make it through to the end of each day would more likely enjoy a more unhealthy but great tasting meal, rather than a healthy but less satisfying one. I asked them to separate the foot-long sub into 2 separate sandwiches in 2 separate bags. My stomach was rumbling and I thought about just eating the first sandwich immediately in the car, but didn't want to risk missing the homeless man, if I were too late. I got everything I paid for, got into my car, and started driving over to where I saw the homeless man.

As he came to my view, I got myself into a gasoline station, to park there. I took out his bag and cup of coke and exited the vehicle... but something rather unexpected happened. As I looked up to the homeless man, there was yet ANOTHER homeless man who approached him... or at the very least he looked homeless from the way they both looked. A lot of facial hair, dirty clothes, messy hair, etc. I was too far away to hear what they were saying. The streets drowned out the sound of their voices. But I was able to make out face gestures and body movements. The homeless man I saw earlier lowered his sign when speaking with the other and was shaking his head in disappointment. The other homeless man looked sad, himself. They started moving away from the street, as if accepting defeat. I couldn't bring myself to just give the first homeless man his meal and ignore the other. I couldn't bring myself to wait it out for the second homeless man to leave, so that I can give the first one his meal, either. If I were to hand him half of my foot-long for the both of them to share, they would each only have 3 inches and have to share the coke. And if it wouldn't be filling for them both, it wouldn't sit right with me, either. My stomach rumbled, asking me for food, as if the two homeless men asking for it weren't enough.

I immediately took out my own sub and bottle of water, as well. I slipped each bag of subs through my right arm and held the bottle of water and cup of coke in each hand. I closed the car door and quickly walked over to the two homeless men and called out to them. "Excuse me!" They both turned to look at me. I remember seeing their eyes take a swift glance at all the food and drinks I was carrying. I lifted my arms towards them and said, "I believe these are yours?" The first homeless man I came across started making his way towards me, rather quick. I thought he was going to grab the food, but he hugged me, almost spilling his cup of coke onto the ground. The dude started crying, almost immediately. He kept repeating, "I saw you in your car. I saw you in your car, man. I saw you in your car". The other homeless man approached me and raised his hand towards me to shake, saying "Thanks, man. We really appreciate it". The first homeless man withdrew his arms from around me. Their movements were of haste, very jittery. I gave the first man his cup of coke and reached over to the other man to shake his hand. After they have received all of the food, I started walking back towards my car saying "Hope you have a good day!" One said "You, too" while the other screamed out "God bless you!"

I got back into my car and drove home. The rest of the day was shit and I starved lol. But hell, if they can keep standing after living through so many difficult days of hunger, I knew I would be able to do the same for just one.
