The Edinburgh Ladies mountaineering club, I think they were called. As I said elsewhere, I used them as inspiration for my book Dark Mountain.

Indeed! Some I’ve worked with look like I’m mad when I’ve said I walked 10miles over the weekend, let along climbing actual mountains!

@RebeccaG Oh walking is a big thing here in Scotland. Every weekend, whatever the weather, folk flock to the hills. These ladies were the harbingers of a amazing pastime.

@helensusanswift I’m near the North Downs in Surrey, lucky to have that so close to home. One thing for Covid, it has got people out exercising in the air more.

@RebeccaG Brilliant! Go for it! You are right about Covid! People began to appreciate what was outside the door. I grew up in Moray, with the Cairngorms half an hour away and the Dava Moor half that, with Torriston Forest at our door - literally. I had to be dragged indoors! We would see more deer or pine martens than cars and people. Now I'm away south in Dundee and hating it.

@helensusanswift There were people in my Close who always drove to the local shops, it’s a 10 minute walk! Wonder why they were tubby? They must be a big miss being closed in like that!
helensusanswift · 26-30, F
@RebeccaG It's the same here. Pure lazy - some folk in Dundee cannae be bothered walking a hundred yards; they'll take a bus. Others - the complete opposite and we can see them running around the city or up to the Angus Glens in all weathers; a city of contrasts. But I'm a Moray Quine and I miss the open skies and big views.

@helensusanswift I did the train trip from Aberdeen to Glasgow once, stunning I thought.

@RebeccaG You'd be crossing the hills then! It's a fine sight (I admit I am biased) but England is lovely too. Herefordshire is one of my favourite places and Northumberland is magical. I liked London, too, strangely enough.

@helensusanswift I guess everywhere has its own charms, but I wouldn’t want to live in a city, they are fine to be visited. Dartmoor and Exmoor are my favourites here.
helensusanswift · 26-30, F
@RebeccaG I've never been to these places- but I have heard they are lovely.
I'd best be away now - a husband to pick up from his work!
Lovely talking to you - stay safe. X

You too, take care x. @helensusanswift
