This reminds me of something...

I was walking with my dog and my girlfriend a few years ago, in Gourock. Louis - my dog - was ranging ahead, because I'd let him off the lead. He ran at a wall and jumped over. But because my gf and I were taller than him, we could both see it was the wall of a bridge. We were horrified.

We both ran forward and looked over the wall, to a drop of about thirty feet. We couldn't see him. I ran to the embankment and was about to climb down and try to find him, when he scrambled up and round the corner of the bridge. He was limping and he looked embarrassed.

I checked him over. He had hurt his leg a bit, but was OK.

Afterwards, when we thought about it, we really laughed. There was a moment where, just as he was clearing the wall, he suddenly seemed to realise what he'd done. Just in that tiny second before gravity took over properly, it actually looked like he was trying to twist and get back onto the bridge. It was like one of those scenes in a cartoon, when the coyote runs over a cliff.

So, my guess is, lively dogs, seeing a wall, jumping over it and not coming off as well as Louis did. The article said that sight wasn't a factor, since dogs couldn't see over the wall. I'd imagine that would mean an eager dog would simply assume the height was the same on both sides.
