I Am Tired of Double Standards

When my children were at school, boys were treated less favourably than girls. My son was told to get his hair cut and to remove his ear studs and other jewellery. At the same time, girls were permitted to have their hair as long as they wanted and to wear make-up and jewellery. Girls were also allowed to wear white socks; boys were not.

The headmaster was something of a dinosaur who clearly had no respect for people, human rights, or the law. He claimed I was making a fuss over nothing. If he thought it was "nothing", why did he stubbornly refuse to allow my son (and other boys) the same freedoms he allowed girls?

My threats of legal action against the school were ignored so I issued proceedings, seeking compensation and injunctive relief. They backed down almost immediately.

The headmaster then claimed that there was no need for me to take such action, that it could all have been sorted out amiably if my son had simply obeyed the unlawful rules. How stupid can anyone be? There wouldn't have been a problem if the school had simply obeyed the law!

@Angel01: It's the same here in the UK. I did sue in the civil (County) court but my claim was against the school and the local education authority, not the headmaster personally.

@Angel01: We can here too but it's usual to claim against the school. Also, the injunction needs to be against the school to prevent other teachers implementing the unlawful policy.

Bwahahahahaha when I was in elementary school, grades 1 - 6, we boys had to take off our hats when we were inside the school while the girls could wear their hats. Of course we boys could wear pants while the girls had to wear skirts so I guess we were equally treated.

@Angel01: Because I treat people as individuals realizing their strength and weaknesses and supporting their efforts to thrive ... ... I see absolutely no need to place anyone into a group restricting what they do or deserve .. ..

@Pop0159: If you treat people as individuals, their sex is irrelevant.

@suzie1960: exactly .. .. I don't strive to treat others equally .. .. more like fairly and appropriately for the individuals they are .. ..
