I Love Being In My Bare Feet

Childhood Shoes/socks House Rule... My mother had a rule about no shoes on in our house, which is pretty normal. What was less normal was that I had to keep my socks on until bathtime right before bedtime. Did anyone else's mom or dad have any unusual rules about socks?

I guess she didn't like seeing bare feet or something. We didn't have any hard rules about no shoes or about socks, but my sister and I usually removed our shoes before coming in the house. My sister often went barefoot, but I usually left my socks on. The only rule we had was no bare feet at the dinner table, so my sister would put socks or slippers on before dinner.

When I got to be about 16, I became very shy about my feet and rarely even took off my shoes until bed time. I secretly wished my parents had enforced a no shoes policy to force me to overcome the shyness I developed, but as long as I had the choice, I usually wore shoes. I finally got over it after a couple of years, but I was still shy about being completely barefoot around anyone but my girlfriend for a while longer. Now I rarely wear anything on my feet unless I have to.

Do you think the dinner rule spurred you to become self-conscious about it when you were a teenager or was it something else?

It was a combination of things I think. My mom would often make fun of my feet for being so big and would often make comments about how she hated seeing people out in public barefoot or in sandals. She took it way too far sometimes. I think that had a lot to do with it. Before I completely developed the shyness, I started feeling awkward in front of her whenever I was barefoot. I felt like she was always judging.

For some reason I also just happened to have a circle of friends who were rarely barefoot. Some rarely removed their shoes even in their homes. I guess we all kind of felt like it wasn't very macho or something.

I also started developing a foot fetish when I hit puberty, so I think relating feet and sex made me feel kind of naked if they were exposed in front of people.

I know what you mean. I also relate feet and eroticism but a turn-on isn't really the same as a fetish; it's only a fetish when it's something so exclusive that it prevents you from having normal sexual relations. But I felt the same way. When I was staying at a friend's house when I was 14 and his mom had to do our laundry I had to come down for breakfast in my pajamas and bare feet and I blushed, of course I didn't want to explain why!

I grew up in a house where you were expected to have socks or slippers on. If you were barefoot around bed or bath time, it was frowned upon but it wasn't a huge deal. My girlfriend grew up in a house where they were expected to keep their shoes on throughout the day! I remember a couple years ago, I was at her parents house and her sister came out of the bathroom barefoot. Holy cow! You would've thought she came out naked; her mom went nuts screaming at her! "What do you think this is?! The beach?! Get some shoes on!!! Lol!

Had to have them on in the house other than bath or bed. I finally took 'em off one summer day and after that, refused to follow that rule. After a lot of back and forth, the parents finally gave in and learned to live with my love of being barefooted!
