I Had a Skunk Encounter

Ending Skunktember This Year In Proper Style!... I suited up and cruised on down to the lake at about 2:30 a.m., and already saw a lovely mostly bold-white striped skunk as I pulled in to the parking space. Unfortunately, the little stinker was alerted to my presence by the inevitable sounds my car door made as I opened and closed it, and he ducked into the nearest pipe (even if I somehow got out of there stealthily it wouldn't matter, he was very close to a fenced-in marina as well and would just duck there).

I came back for that skunk a few times and got sort of close, but don't think I quite caught him/her, I can't be fully sure. The opprotunities just didn't present themselves properly.

I found another smaller mostly-black skunk some time later, but he was way too close to the treeline and of course darted into the shrubs the minute he heard my approach. Certain environmental hazards like rained-out marshy areas near the creek completely killed any stealth I might've otherwise had, sadly.

But this doesn't end in failure, I'm happy to report. As I did a few more loops, I saw a very lovely skunk rooting for grubs and just the right distance and location to do a very stealthy and quick tail-grab, maximizing the element of surprise when I did so as well. I realized too late I was still wearing my long-sleeved hoodie (it was after all around 54 degrees last night) and I quickly rolled my sleeves up after getting a few misty shots on my pants and face, putting my arm right up to the sprayers and seeing what I could milk out. I got enough to scent my faithful skunk plush Penelope, my hair and both arms of course, but the skunk seemed to run dry fairly quickly this time, despite having waited 2 weeks. Either they blew a lot of it on my legs early on or maybe I caught the skunk on less than a full tank.

But oh, wearing that lovely, wonderful, skunky scent. I keep sniffing it on my sprayed clothing and arms, letting the rich aroma flood my senses. So many lovely la<x>yers in it too, the garlic, the sulfur, some coffee beans and definitely a gasoline-like scent, and that sweet root beer-like musky overtone. That's what really makes it "skunk" to me, that addicting sweetness that makes all the other stinks worth wearing. Just so overpowering and wonderful to wear and enjoy, an olfactory feast of scents. I sometimes feel selfish that I can wear this while other skunk-sniffers are stuck only smelling skunk on the wind occasionally. For those I can only say, definitely order some Pete Rickard's Skunk Essence to tide you over, it's got the proper balance of potency and sweetness.
