I Had a Skunk Encounter

Another Fun Night At The Lake.... Hello my fellow skunk-sniffing readers,

I got dressed in my previously-sprayed clothing last night with the full intent of going to my favorite skunk-inhabited lakeside park for a perfuming. Arriving shortly after dusk, I wandered for about an hour, luck seeming to be with me on stealth since the wind was blowing my existing pungent scent in the opposite direction of the known skunk habitats. Alas, there were still park patrons driving from the park, and skunks won't come out with noisy humans around if they can help it. Once the cars had stopped leaving the park, I knew the skunks would be coming out looking for grubs.

Sure enough, on my second pass toward some known habitats, there was a rather handsome little skunk sniffing around by a pond, not noticing my flashlight shining on him. (I have to simply assume he's male due to the time of year, any females would likely be pregnant or nursing kits). I turned off my light and bolted after him; in my haste I ended up dropping and losing it, but I easily caught up to the little stinker. Looking up at me, he started to lift tail in warning but seeing I was still almost upon him he began running, only to find his escape routes sadly limited by his proximity to the pond, which gave me a chance to gently but firmly grip the ba<x>se of his tail.

Warm musk pelted my pants and shirt immediately of course, and that beautiful mix of natural aromas I so enjoy filled my nose. Thanking him with each spray in calm, pleasant tones I then started tapping at his sides and rump to direct the sprays more along my exposed arms and face, which the skunk obliged me with. As I admired his stripes and lovely tail, I saw the skunkie seemed more interested in just getting away than really fighting me. When I moved my arm anywhere near his head he did attempt to bite, so he certainly wasn't happy about being detained by a skunk-loving human. As each warm squirt hit my hand I would happily spread the skunk oil over my neck and arms like a fine cologne, thoroughly enjoying myself. Once I was well-skunked and happy with my new overpowering reek, I released him on his way and walked back to my car to go home.

Oh, that lovely skunky fragrance! I'll always enjoy it, even at the eye-watering levels a fresh spray can bring. That potent mix of stinks and sweetness really relaxes me and puts a big goofy grin on my face, catapulting me to olfactory nirvana. It's hypnotic, really, and it's nicer qualities are why I have collected bottles of diluted skunk scent over the years. Of course, nothing can really compete with a fresh spray. It's nature's own perfume from the cutest and most pacifistic little perfumers.

Once I got in the bright light of my garage I examined the little stinker's handiwork. Golden amber musk shined and tingled all along both arms, and especially saturated my right hand and palm where I'd been provoking more aimed streams. A splash or two hit my face but none reached my eyes, which I'd protected anyway with safety goggles. Still I had to admire just how completely I'd been skunked, it was very impressive, and I'm honored to have been so saturated.

Alas, I do have to go to work and maintain a social life, so I had to remove the scent. Deodorizing took about 30 minutes with the hydrogen-peroxide baking soda mix, and my garage is still quite skunky from my presence within. I'd forgotten once again to remove my wristwatch before being sprayed, so it was skunked and nothing I've done to it will really impact the scent (something quite nice for me, but also embarrassing in public). I've noticed that it's still quite pungent and will flood an area with the scent (albeit mildly) if I've hung around long enough, so I'll probably have to purchase and wear a backup watch for the next couple of weeks. I'd hate to get in trouble at work or asked to leave a store just because of my scent!

WELCOME BACK TO THE CHASE! As I've written I am laying plans to entice a mother and kits to my part-time forested office. Do they start going about together by June? WISH I could join you in Okla.!!!!!!!!!!!
