I 60's Canings

As I have written before, the cane was finally abolished in Danish schools in 1967, four years after I started in school.
My maternal grandmother, who passed away at the age of no less than 102 in 2001, was a teacher back in the days, when the cane was still allowed and also used in schools.
She was not a teacher at my school, though, for which I was grateful, considering her reputation for being some caner!
In fact, she retired in 1967, the very year the cane was banned.
“I was glad I was able to retire at that point,” she said several times.
“How on earth would one be able to maintain discipline in a class without this tool?” she asked.
She certainly did not mind telling about how she caned boys as well as girls during her teaching days – and almost always the allowed maximum of 6 strokes.
“Of course, one was only allowed to cane their fully clothed bottoms, but in the summer time, when the girls were wearing thing summer dresses, it did not matter that much – and if a boy was wearing shorts, one could ‘accidentally’ aim too low and place a welt across his bare thighs!” as she put it!
She was really some lady!

The cane was not abolished in English state schools for a further 2 decades (1986) and another decade later (1997) in private schools. Your grandmother sounds like a formidable woman. I taught in England before the abolition of corporal punishment and I share many of your grandmother's views.

@Oldmanjimbo: She certainly was a formidable lady.

@Oldmanjimbo: yes the English were correct to keep it

@Daduk: What is tragic is that we didn't keep it. I was fortunate to retire before it's abolition but schools are a very different place today.

@Daduk: I agree. So should the Danes have done.
