I Am An Aunt
Yesterday, I did something that I didn't think I wanted to do at first but I did it anyways and in the end it was a very special experience. I have a niece and nephew from my ex husbands family. I've stayed close to my niece who is 17. Her mom was paraplegic from the time she was 3 months old. My niece found her dead in her bed a couple years ago. It was tragic. Really. It was even sadder watching her struggle daily. It's difficult to say it was almost a relief.
So something a little lighter. My niece is going through her senior year and was telling my daughters and anyone who would listen that she's trying to get through all the end of year stuff. The banquets, prom, what not. The special fun stuff. My daughter and I went dress shopping with her. On the second trip I found a great deal on a white dress for her to wear on senior dress up day. It's traditional to wear white and she will use it for graduation too. Then at the very end of the night after numerous stores and dressing rooms we visited a near by wedding dress store that was only open for 45 more minutes. There were brides trying on dresses and some very helpful employees that were so nice to us. She found her dress. It was really fun. I kept myself from crying but barely. She said "yes to the prom dress' and then said she felt like her mom was with us. She high fived me and called her dad to let him know. It was a great price. I thanked her for letting me take her shopping.
