I Love Meditation

What is Meditation?

The moment we utter the word “meditation,” there are all kinds of misconceptions about it. First of all, the English word “meditation” doesn’t mean anything in the sense, if you close your eyes and sit, in English we call it “meditation.” You can sit with your eyes closed and do many things. There are many dimensions. You can do japa, tapa, dharana, dhyana, samadhi, shoonya. Or you might have just mastered the art of sleeping in vertical postures!

So what is this thing that we call as meditation? Generally we assume that people are referring to what is known as dhyan or dhyana. In that context of referring to dhyan as meditation, it is not something that you can do. Nobody can do meditation. The reason why most people who have tried meditation have come to the conclusion that it’s very difficult or impossible is because they are trying to do it.You cannot do meditation but you can become meditative. Meditation is a certain quality. It is not a certain act. If you cultivate your body, your mind, your energies and your emotions to a certain level of maturity, meditation will naturally happen. It is just like if you keep the soil fertile, if you give it the necessary manure and water and if the right kind of seed is there, it will grow and bloom into flowers and fruits.

Flowers and fruits will come out of a plant not because you want it, but simply because you created the necessary, conducive atmosphere. Similarly, if you create the necessary atmosphere within yourself, on all the four dimensions of who you are, then meditation will naturally flower within you. It is a certain fragrance that one can enjoy within himself.

The main aspect of meditation is, right now your mind is the boss and you are the slave. As you meditate and become more meditative, you will become the boss and your mind will become the slave and that is how it should always be. If you don’t know how to keep the mind as a slave, it will put you through all kinds of endless suffering. If you allow the mind to rule, it is a terrible master. But as a slave, the mind is wonderful – it is a miraculous slave.

I hope this may help those who are starting up with this experience.

Your post reminds me of A T-shirt quote I love:

MEDITATION
IS NOT
WHAT YOU THINK
ABCDEF7 · M
@Nelladell Hahaha.. And what do you think?

I don't know why the complete video by Sadhguru is not linked now. I will try it to get working.

What I think is that it's obviously true, but said in a delightful way.
SW-User
I agree it’s life changing, you can try tratak meditation too tbh
ABCDEF7 · M
@SW-User Tratak is good for good for developing concentration, That would help you in Meditation. I don't think Tratak itself is a meditation.
SW-User
@ABCDEF7 true tbh it’s also used as yogic purification so depends as I had student tips booklet which described it as a type of meditation
ABCDEF7 · M
@SW-User Everyone is teaching his/her own way of meditating these days. Many has commercialized it. There are many misconceptions and many are actually ignorant. It has really become confusing for a layman to get to the truth and reality. Many even doesn't understand the difference between concentration and meditation.

Also updated the post and corrected the Youtube link.

What do you think of doctor Pillai ?
ABCDEF7 · M
@revenant It depends what works for you. Om dhyanam is good for initial stages when it's difficult for you to get started with meditation. Actually it starts with having mastery in concentration first.
revenant · F
@ABCDEF7 you are not telling me much
ABCDEF7 · M
@revenant I am really sorry if you felt like this. Although I am a seeker myself and not a master. Actually in search of a right Guru.

But if there is anything in particular you want to discuss, I will try my best with the knowledge and experiences I have.
revenant · F
so how do you do it properly ?
ABCDEF7 · M
@revenant Thanks for stopping by and reading this post. :)

I am still in the process of understanding it. I was trying to do meditation the way usually people approaches it and how most of the people were teaching that. But I was not satisfied. I felt I wasn't getting where I wanted to be. It seems more like concentration than meditation to me. While as per Ashtanga yoga principles, concentration and meditation as two different things, and meditation being the next step to concentration.

The above post is an excerpt from one of Sadhguru's talk, and this has also has been published on their website. I really liked the way sadhguru removed some of my confusions about the meditation in his answer to the practitioner in the video. That's why I shared it.

as an unsuccessful meditator, this has been beneficial. Keep up the encouraging posts.

I love it too

It all sounds so vague. Planting a seed in the manure of my mind so that a flower will grow? I much prefer to contemplate specific things.
