I Live In Australia

Today is a short journey through the History of Fremantle Western Australia.

Fremantle is a major Australian port city in Western Australia, located at the mouth of the Swan River. Fremantle Harbour serves as the port of Perth, the state capital. Fremantle was the first area settled by the Swan River colonists in 1829. It was declared a city in 1929.

The city is named after Captain Charles Fremantle, the English naval officer who established a camp at the site on 2 May 1829. The city contains well-preserved 19th century buildings and other heritage features.

The Round House was the first permanent building built in the Swan River Colony. Built in late 1830 and opened in 1831, it is the oldest building still standing in Western Australia.
The Round House was used for colonial and indigenous prisoners until 1886, when control of the Convict Establishment prison (now Fremantle Prison) was transferred to the colony. After that the Round House was used as a police lockup until 1900, when it became the living quarters for the chief constable and his family.

The first group of convicts to populate Fremantle arrived on 1 June 1850 on the barque, Scindian. Between 1850 and 1868, ultimately 9721 convicts were transported to Western Australia. The last convict ship to Western Australia, the Hougoumont, left Britain in 1867 and arrived in Western Australia on 10 January 1868.

1861. Construction of The Lunatic Asylum began.
[image deleted]Fremantle Asylum was a government-run facility, established in 1865 to house adult 'lunatics'. But by the 1890s increasing numbers of children aged 9-15 years with intellectual and other disabilities were sent there. Children were transferred to the new 'hospital for the insane' (Claremont Mental Hospital) between 1903 and 1908. Fremantle Asylum closed in 1909.

1868. Transportation of convicts to Western Australia ceased in 1868 as a result of a reassessment of British home policy, with the last convict ship to Australia, the Hougoumont, arriving in the Swan River Colony on 10 January 1868 with 229 convicts aboard.

"Fremantle", was proclaimed a city.

During World War 2, Fremantle became home to one of the largest bases for Allied submarines in the Southern Hemisphere. There were up to 167 US, British and Dutch submariners throughout the war.

After the war, Fremantle became what it always was, a working port.
Fremantle was left to it's own devices and the vices of a working Port City.

Decay and deprivation was consuming Fremantle, Then a miraculous event took place at Newport, Rhode Island where the Australian Syndicated Maxi Yacht, AUSTRALIA ll, of the Royal Perth Yacht Club took on and beat The Dennis Conner skippered, Liberty of the New York Yacht Club.
Never having been beaten in 132 years, John Bertrand's crew had a secret weapon.
A boat designed by Ben Lexen with a radical "New" Winged Keel.
[image deleted]The Winged Keel gave a technical advantage of which I am not privy to.

Winning the Cup meant the return bout would be hosted in Fremantle 4 years later. An extensive refurbishment of Fremantle was undertaken to beautify the decayed working port.
The port city was not only on the receiving end of a much needed facelift but that areas like Fishing Boat Harbour were revamped to become the tourist mecca it is today.

The Yacht, Australia ll is now housed in the purpose built Western Australian Maritime Museum on Fremantle Harbour.

That is but a snap shot of Fremantle.
I could go on and talk about the enormous contribution made by the Italian Immigrants who have transformed Fremantle into a "Little Italy"
I could go on about the white beaches surrounding Fremantle, the Haunted Buildings, the Aboriginal Art Galleries. On and on.
Me thinks I will leave that for another day.
