I Am Scared of Clowns

Talking with my partner about phobias, I realise that I may have a mild phobia for clowns. I am not afraid of them, but find them quite creepy and seeing them, instead of making me laugh, makes me deeply sad.
I think I would start screaming in deep disgust if someone tried to paint my face to make me look like a clown. Only the thought of it gives me the creeps.

Clowns were and perhaps still are deeply sad people.

I always thought so, and that sadness is contagious

In cinema depictions it has a humanizing effect, which creates sympathy, Lon Chaney a fine example. I think the true clown who realizes s/he isn't providing joy, will stop and find another profession, thus suggesting that those who remain clowns are pure evil.
