They still had it when I went to Catholic school. I never got it -- one reason I think is my parents had a rule --get spanked at school, get another one at home (it seems incredible in this age when they are ready to sue if teacher looks cross-eyed at little Johnny or Jane). I had the distinct impression that Mom's bare bottom blistering would be much worse than what the nuns dished out. 馃榾

I am on the school board of the Catholic school my kids attend, and I have tried to bring back corporal punishment-- I am (like many other parents) a super big advocate. But even though it is a conservative school with a classical liberal curriculum, corporal punishment has just become too controversial --it makes the lawyers too nervous.

@CathyUK When enrollment is optional, such as in non-government funded (private, in the U.S.) schools, I think that is fine. Of course, when I was a child, in the 1980's, nobody's consent was required and school seemed to be much more orderly than now.

@StrictSouthernHOH I agree, ours seemed to have carte blanche

@CathyUK So did ours. Some teachers took great pride in how hard they paddled and how much they made us cry. Of course, they all let our parents know what happened. A spanking at school meant a worse one at home for most of us, both boys and girls.

There are a lot of abuses. I know most places the parent has to be called to approve it. It really depends on what happened.

@Mrpauldavies There was a lot of abuse in schools in the UK. In some schools CP was used even though teachers admitted it wasn't needed and they had more effective methods.

Well yes as you have show 19 states still allow paddling in schools. I look at it as if parents send their kids to school so the school will teach them then why not allow the teachs to discipline them to. Some parents do not discipline at all so if the parents refuse to well then let the school system discipline. Yes it is harsh but the parents have a choice if the do not want to take the responsibility of raising there children well let the ones that are teaching the children discipline them.

Well I grew up in Louisiana in the 70's and the paddle was and STILL is used in Louisiana. I got my fanny burned by the paddle more than just once! LOL My highschool principal set my butt on fire with the paddle. And I could count on getting even worse at home.

Still requires parental consent
