I Want to Thank the Veterans

I'm a veteran, but I think there is a special place for those veterans who 75 years ago(The greatest generation) on this
day were involved in the D-Day Operation. They are passing by the thousands, but today we need to be particularly aware of their service and sacrifices.

D-DAY
(c) 2019 Edward York

The boats that brought the soldiers,
Anchored offshore just out of reach.
But many men who disembarked,
Never even made the beach.

The bullets showered on every side,
Enough to take your breath.
Fear took hold of every man,
As they waded through the death.

The men who served knew what lay ahead,
They understood what defeat means.
And many were not men at all,
Having yet to escape their teens.

The machine gun fire from German soldiers,
Did not stop us from storming straight ahead.
No obstacle would slow us down,
Not even the fallen dead.

Those who died just paved the way,
For us to just send more.
To lay and bleed their final breath,
On top of this foreign shore.
