I Like to Read Anything That Catches My Interest

I was reading about sociopaths and I came across a story written from the point of view of one.

It was very interest though kind of disturbing, but that's beside the point. I had to pause when I came across a sentence the ended like this:

"he was smiling so widely that his teeth showed."

Uh... what?

Sociopaths don't have empathy and misread social cues so perhaps this was the authors way of showing that disconnect?

I guess he meant a closed smile? Like, the closed smile was so wide that it forced his mouth open?
