I believe there are as many reasons for being a politician as there are politicians. Some are well-intentioned, some are not.
Having said that, I vehemently disagree with 1961Dave. I think Hillary is amazing and that she has shown repeatedly that she not only cares a great deal about this country, she also is skilled in negotiations, dealing with other cultures, and political savvy. I also think there's a good chance she will be our next president and if this happens, there will be a tremendous cultural shift in the US. So many men are fearful of a woman becoming president. Especially the over 50 cohorts.
If Trump becomes president, we're in for a cultural shift of another kind. He only knows how to use a hammer, so everything becomes a nail. If a government could be run like a corporation, things would look very different.
Oh... wait... whoever said the corporate model is good... or even works? How many people hate their jobs? How many people think they truly have job security? How many people in mid-to-high-paying job work 80 hours a week or more?
Yeah... the corporate model is really something to admire, isn't it.
