I Want To Talk Politics

The inherent vice of capitalism is the unequal sharing of the blessings. The inherent blessing of socialism is the equal sharing of misery. —

Well I can totally understand Churchill saying something like that. His racist views led to over 3 million deaths in the bengal famine of India where he refused to send relief, instead diverting all of it to the west. Unequal sharing of blessings indeed!!!

Agree with the second part.I don't think sharing of the blessings is vice though.
What I see as the inherent vice of capitalism is that it commodifies everything and everyone.
In a healthy society, people are not overly taxed, which allows for the creation of more jobs in the private sector, which in turn allows for greater employment, and basic necessities may then be purchased.

Those who are indeed impoverished (again, within a healthy society) may be cared for by a charity (via a faith based group)

I love that quote.
Churchill has some good ones
Cierzo:
Capitalism does not necessitate turning everything into commodities. When one is allowed to keep what one earns: the possibilities of what thAt one may then do with his earnings are endless.
With socialism: I see mankind as the primary commodity (I am reminded of the 'battery' status of each in "matrix")

NotPC: I think there are matters like health, education, housing, electricity, where it is dangerous that the market is the sole purveyor. The market may be more efficient in their production, but not in the distribution, and not having the access to them makes it impossible to live a dignified life.
Definitely I'll be reading on this
Thanks!

Agree that heavy taxation is a huge mistake.
But even with a much lower ones, if you do not control or offer an alternative to oligopolies, large groups will be deprived or basic services. Charity may help, but it cannot solve homelessness problem alone, for instance.

Npc : yes pls do. During the Jewish holocaust 6 million Jews were killed. This is like the second holocaust and yet it doesn't find a mention in most history books.
When told about the famine Churchill's first comment was 'did gandhi die?' and he was disappointed when told no he didn't.
Power companies in the US aren't owned by the government, people consistently are able to purchase what is needed.

The government is not intended to be in business, I witness this on a daily basis

What happens to those who cannot pay the prices of those basic services. That would not happen if competition was real, but today most markets are oligopolistic. It is in those markets where state should compete too.
And in a healthy society, the oligarchs of the utilities (monopolies) would be made to serve the people instead of themselves
BigAsset:
That's just terrible!
I'll be reading on that event
Cierzo · M
Yes, it is the state who can control oligarchs
