I Was Fired

Toward the end of the summer I was given the job of long term subbing for a teacher out on maternity leave. I was really excited for the opportunity even though the school isn't so great. However, on only my second day the principal came in to observe. I didn't think it went so badly. On the day of my 4th day the principal asked me if I would be there after school. "Of course" I said. She finally came in and told me she had "concerns." I did not meet the "positive to correctiveness ratio of 4:1 meaning I was more corrective than positive (though I was never mean or negative when I was corrective). I also only had 12 of 16 kids engaged. She said she found somebody better suited to take the job. I asked does that mean I won't come back tomorrow and she just responded with "that's right."

Now at the time all I felt was sadness. I thought I had did a great job for it to only have been a week, I've got them to where they needed to be on time every day, their grades were improving, I was always prepped for the next day. I was never given a warning or even a chance to fix what she apparently witnessed. Later, I started thinking into it a little more. 1) She didn't observe any of the other 3 long term subs in depth (they told me). 2) She never asked any of the other 3rd grade teachers how I was doing outside of the time she observed me. 3) She never told the teacher I was subbing for that she was replacing me (important because now somebody that knows nothing about her classroom is taking over--- I worked with her a few weeks before she left). 4) It was so random and only a few days on my own before deciding to get rid of me. I'm still not quite sure why it happened though plenty of people in this small town have told me it's probably the "good ole boy system." I had to ask for a definition of that one because I had never heard it. Apparently she knew somebody who asked for a job then asked what grade she preferred. I'm so mad because I have a child to take care of. Ugh.

Thanks all! It was a public school, but I live in a part of the Bible Belt where the schools might as well be private based on "values."

@Kellusion Kel, over 5 years later now, that remains an amazing experience you shared with us! 👏

Sorry to hear that happened to you. Certainly doesn't sound like a fair system or a real reason they fired you.
You teach 3rd graders?
I tip my hat to you miss.
That does seem like a odd thing to happen and all we can do is speculate. Could be that the principal had someone else in mind for the position and no matter what you were going to be replaced. She was just going through the motions with in class observation. Good luck on your next job.
sorry to hear you got fired for what sounds like to me a bullshit reason what the heck is a positive to correctness ratio and how do they measure it
maybe she had a cousin that needed a teaching job maybe the principle didn't like the way you look. There will always be employers whom no matter what you do it isn't right . Never good enough

Unfortunately it happens more often then anyone realizes. "Good ole boy" as you noted or nepotism is bad in many small towns where everyone knows everyone.
You didn't deserve that and I am sure, based on your comments you will find another teaching opportunity.

Thats exactly what happened at the school I was working. Is it a private school? They're so shady.

You will find another school to sub at.

S**t happens honey, and I think you will look back one day and realise it was not you that caused the "parting of the ways"😉
ninjavu · 56-60, M
Well, assuming the "positive-to-correctiveness ratio" wasn't just a bullshit excuse, she's a shitty principal who is more of a bean counter than a proper school administrator. Otherwise I'd say talk to a lawyer, or the union if you're in one, but I think teachers are undervalued, especially in the US.

That's total bullshit! Sorry to hear that, I hope you find something soon and you will be happy.

sounds like a bullshit reason
