What is a thundersnow ?

We're gonna be getting one this weekend my girlfriend is kind of scared she's never heard of one. I don't think i ever heard of one either. She read about it it said it had some kind of cyclone with it to her it sounds like a tornado which scares her. Luckily we're more south into the state so hopefully it won't effect us much. What the hell is a thundersnow ? How can I make my girlfriend feel safe through one ?

Surreal experience.

Spent time near KS and we'd get them. A week before xmas, was walking home one night and the sky opened up in a torrent of giant snow flakes. Lighting overhead, thunder, the works above snow cloud.
Switched to pounding hail 10 mins in, everyone ran.
You're right, think it's a tornadic thing. Or in severe T storms. We'd get a cyclone sighting in the state every time it rained.

It's simply thunder and lightning occurring in colder weather. It was sleeting and 36 degrees here last week with rumbling thunder and some lightning flashes around.
