I Love a Clean House

After living in the same house for 30 years, I am amazed at the stuff I have managed to accumulate. I am not in hoarding status, but i have to admit, I have too much stuff. I have given away thousands of items and still not sure I have made a dent.

Do you have too much stuff?

Uggggggg ... I just counted. 3 DVD players, 2 power-point projectors, a wide carriage inkjet printer, three document scanners, two extra flat screens .... none of the mentioned have been used in 2+ years. Add that to the 2 chests of assorted electronic wires, cables, and other assorted electronic, expensive "junk" that desperately needs a better home. What I don't have and want is a quality cassette tape player so I can listen to priceless, old cassette tapes I inherited. I gave my last cassette tape player away 3 years ago :(

What I also want is a turntable to play old LP albums I likewise would like to hear. I gave the last turntable away 8+ years ago.

Then there's all my old family 35 mm slides I'd like to see. I did find an old projector in the basement and plugged it in, expecting to give the family a treat. As I was trying to show the first old slide the projector exploded. So add a slide projector to my wish list.

I think most people have way too much stuff - myself included.

@sciguy18 i can always count on you for a good quote. i am single yet managed to amass a mass of stuff. oh gosh...i hope i never get to be that relieved.

I think we humans just seem to collect stuff. Especially when we are younger. My rule of thumb is, If I haven't used it in five years it can probably go.

@lasergraph i have been on this clean out mode for over a year or 2. but i kicked it in high gear when i saw what i had. good rule of thumb on the 5 year thing!

Ugh, I hear you....my son says when I die he will just burn the house rather than try to clear it out...LOL....I think he is joking....😲

@akindheart Nothing deflates the value of electronics like compatibility issues. Like it's all good stuff but doesn't connect, or doesn't connect as well as another alternative. Is there a market for not-so-old electronic that still works but may not work very well or at all with the latest Windows or IOS?

I have things in boxes from when we moved 11 years ago. They obviously have no value and should be donated or destroyed.

@jim44444 i am ashamed at all the stuff i have. and the time it is taking to get rid of it. the sad thing is i have given thousands of things away and still have not made a dent...

I want to make one thing perfectly clear. All of those leftover pieces of wood in my workshop are not firewood. They are valuable material for future undefined projects.
akindheart · 61-69, F
@jim44444 LOL!! that is what I say about all of my fabric but you have heard that one too, right? hugs and kisses to you
I exactly know how you feel. I was in the same boat as you a few years ago.. It can be extremely difficult especially trying to gather everything together😑

@shelikesher I know!! now i have piles for a yard sale..and nowhere to put the junk until then!
sometimes we find we've accumulated a lot , and then we either give away what we can or throw out
I am in the same or similar situation.

@jjoe01 it has been my repeating mantra the whole time i have been on this site...and yet the stuff continues. i am going thru drawers and cabinets now..
