Puerto Rico: Human Rights Concerns Mount in Absence of Adequate Emergency Response

(Note: I am posting this story in the "I Am Puerto Rican" group because it directly relates to the ongoing emergency in Puerto Rico...I am not Puerto Rican)

GENEVA (30 October, 2017) - Puerto Rico remains without an effective emergency response more than a month after Hurricane Maria devastated the island, a group of U.N. human rights experts has warned.

"The hurricane has aggravated the island's existing dire situation caused by debt and austerity measures," the experts noted, saying the situation remained "alarming" for the island's 3.5 million residents.

"Thousands of people are displaced, with homes destroyed, and without any relief in sight.
More than 80 percent of the population, or close to 2.8 million people, continue to live without electricity.
Few hospitals are functioning.
There are allegations that the water available - for those who have access to it - may be contaminated.
With winter approaching, we call for a speedy and well-resourced emergency response that prioritizes the most vulnerable and at risk - children, older people, people with disabilities, women and homeless people."

Wasn't there allegations of the leadership on the Island stealing supplies and hurting their political opponents? I just want to know if you have seen anything like this.

@shockerllnl I have not heard that rumor..but I did read that food and water containers were found in dumpsters and garbage dumps, and that 3,000 shipping containers filled with food and water were sitting untouched at the port in San Juan, but FEMA is in denial about it. (Google: "FEMA Insists Containers Sitting In San Juan Port Aren't Filled With Aid")

@shockerllnl In Trumpian terms, that Daily Mail story is "fake news"..(The Daily Mail is the UK's version of The National Enquirer)..I just checked into that "Puerto Rico cop" story..it's entirely based on a phone call to a New York radio station supposedly made by a guy who SAYS he's "a Puerto Rico cop"...No major, verifiable source exists that offers any proof that what this "cop" said is true...There's not even proof that he's actually a Puerto Rican cop...You can't believe a story is true just because some You Tube videos and/or some right-wing dis-info websites say that it's true...From the many "reputable" sources I've read, Mayor Cruz is doing all she can to help not only her constituents, but also all the people of Puerto Rico...She has criticized the Trump administration & FEMA for not doing enough for the millions of Puerto Ricans who live in outlying areas of the island, and who still do not have food, clean water to drink, and electricity....She's not the problem, TRUMP and his FEMA are the problem!
