I Think The Cane Should Be Bought Back Into The School System

I just found this article from 2011 while searching for the part when David Niven talks about getting 12 strokes in "The Moon's A Balloon"

Bringing back corporal punishment to the schools in an interesting thought, but that is as far as it will get. During my days in school in Northern Arkansas, administrators had pretty much free reign when it came to spanking the kids. No one questioned how it was done and who was administering it.

As time went on improprieties by certain teachers and staff began to surface and regulations began being placed on this practice. This really escalated in the late 1960's and 1970's when many people from "up north" began moving down south due to companies relocating and/or moving to get away from colder climates. This was also the period many of the schools here began forced integration of Black students from nearby communities.

Eventually the "witness" rules was incorporated into the school procedures as well as limitations on who could dole it out and how much. Because most schools limited the swats to 5 or less, the admins began hitting harder to make up the difference. Then we began seeing instances where kids had severely bruised backsides which slowly but surely led some schools to completely eliminate the practice.

Interestingly, my schools still allow up to ten swats although they will be divided into two 5 swat sessions.

If a student chooses to break a rule, the following will occur:
Warning No Consequences
1
st Consequence 20 minutes after school detention
2
nd Consequence 40 minutes after school detention
3
rd Consequence Refer to principal’s office
Severe Clause Student immediately goes to principal’s office
If a student is referred to the principal’s office under the assertive discipline program, the
following procedure will be followed each nine week period.
1
st Referral 60 minutes detention or six swats with a paddle.
2
nd Referral 80 minutes detention or eight swats with a paddle.
3
rd Referral 100 minutes detention or ten swats with a paddle.
4 or more Referrals 1 day suspension for each infraction
13
Any total of more than five swats will be spread over two days.

Me three! Detention was a complete waste of time, time out of my life I'll never get back.

Definitely! I did whenever I had the choice.

After reading that article I can't help but laugh at the comment I made (BEFORE reading it). Let's consider the disciplinary options that I was subjected to at school:
Detention. Complete waste of time, and half the time I just didn't bother turning up!
Getting dropped from the school football team. Looking back, I hated them for that, because the lad that took my place in the team got picked up and played football professionally for over 20 years (lower leagues of the football league), playing around 200 first team matches. And I was the better goalkeeper! That still grates on me!!
Corporal punishment. The slipper didn't really have too much of an effect on me once I reached 13, but by Christ, I was TERRIFIED of the cane. That kept me as merely being a pain and lively, just constantly doing stupid stuff for a laugh, as opposed to actually being properly bad.

These do-gooders can say what they like, but if it was brought back and my daughter ended up getting it - she'd get the same level of sympathy from me that I got, which was along the lines of 'you deserved it!'

I forgot that farce of doing lines or writing punishment essays. Urgh! Maybe writing essays brought about my love of writing, and doing lines was pretty much the same as detention - I'd rather get the slipper for not bothering to do them!!

I got the cane plenty of times during high school. While other forms of punishment were used I was always a little relieved when I got the cane as I knew it would be over with fairly quickly. It certainly hurt but then it was supposed to.

I agree cp should be brought back in schools as a deterrent, but not as a substitute for discipline in the home which l think some parents seem to think it's up to the teacher to discipline when it's not. Education is their job. But they should be given authority to discipline when needed.
Look at today's classroom, a teacher has no authority whatsoever
