I Love Arlo Guthrie

I seriously can't believe that I am the only person who absolutely loves the songs of Arlo Guthrie - or at least is brave enough to admit it.

I have loved Arlo's music since becoming acquainted with it in the late Seventies. His father, Woody Guthrie, was also a great song writer and singer, but I think Arlo gave better renditions of some of Woody's songs - e. g., "Hobo's Lullaby" and "1913 Calumet Massacre".

My wife and I have seen Arlo - and, more recently, his children as well - several times. The most recent times were at Calumet, Michigan and at the Ark in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

An Arlo story: It was Christmas of 1975 and I was teaching high school in San Jose, Costa Rica. Over the holiday break, I was watching some friends' house while they went to see family in the States. I found a book they had on Arlo Guthrie which gave the complete monologue from "Alice's Restaurant". Having nothing else to do, I spent the afternoon memorizing it - all of it.

Now, jump ahead several years. I am in law school. I and a friend went to the local bohemian bar, got pretty drunk, and went to see the "Alice's Restaurant" movie at a midnight showing. Being drink, I decided it would be a good idea to quote out loud along with the movie; and, being drunk, I was constantly about a half second behind the movie. Luckily, the other movie patrons did not kill me.

Arlo rules.
