The Holy Land
Of all the places I have visited, the Holy Land was the most interesting. My late husband and I lived in Jerusalem and toured from the Golan Heights to the Red Sea, trying to visit as many of the historical sites as possible. The people were, by-and-large friendly, although some of the security was tough. Loved Nazareth and the Sea of Galilee where Christ walked on water. We stayed right at the water's edge there, trying to capture the atmosphere.
Tremendous.
The old town of Jerusalem is very expensive, with the Arabs not always friendly, but the Armenian quarter was the opposite, and only half a mile's walk away the local folk were fantastic and the prices reduced by 75%.
It was a bit disconcerting to see young women in uniform and carrying automatic weapons in shops full of children, and squadrons of tanks parked beside the road near ruins that were thousands of years old, but I suppose a reminder that history is now, as much as it was two thousand years ago.
