I grew up speaking two languages including English. I took Hindi as a subject in school. Then I start to pick up Tamil as it's quite similar to my mother tongue. Now I installed an app to learn French. 😊
For me English is the main language of choice. Yet I learned Hindi in school. I picked up Tamil from my parents. I picked up on Malayalam in school as well even though it wasn't taught and Kannada as I had to work in the state where the language was spoken by the locals
@Lostindespair cool. I thought Kannada was hard but I realised could understand some of it when I was in Bangalore. Telugu seemed similar to Kannada to me
@JBird To be honest Kannada is the easiest language of them all. I was in Bangalore as well and I met a lot of people there who had no idea of the language and were fluent at it. It is more similar to Hindi and Tamil.
As you mentioned if you can pick up Kannada then Telugu is similar as well.
@SW-User I think you want to say multilingual 😛 Linguistics is the scientific descriptive study of languages, not necessarily for the purpose of speaking them.
You can be a linguist even if you are monolingual and focusing on single language or dialect
