Ooh, an interesing idea that didn't cross my mind! I don't think there is solid evidence that he even existed.
Since you are interested in religion you might enjoy this lecture by Michael Davies in which he argues that is essentially what the heresy of modernism is all about -- the Magesterium wielding to popular opinion --when it is suppose to be the other way around.

A great example would be the dismissal of many negativities males face in the west to pander to the delusions of third wave feminism.
