do you think education should be free for everyone and payed for by taxes?

do you think education should be free for everyone and payed for by taxes? why do you think it is or is not a good idea?
I think education should not be free, or paid by taxes, I pay taxes, I don't want to be paying for people who go through college and take advantage for it, there are tons of people who's parents are rich and they go through college barley passing just drinking and having fun, not learning anything. I also think that its not fair to pay for other peoples education passed high school. Having free college devalues education. Im not against having it cheaper but if it was completely free it would become a useless way to judge who should get the job. professors already don't make a lot many of them have to teach at multiple colleges because they do not get hired as full professor at any of them.there has been a move away from full professors and more adjunct professors. If we made education free professors would earn less because the government would not be able to fund all the salaries at this level.they should raise teacher salaries as it is. I think that if you make higher education free then you would have to make housing free and food free. Higher education is not a necessity so I do not think it should be free. people who think that tell me that i just want people to be stupid or that it will be cheaper. I dont want people to be stupid if they want to go to college they should start earning some money and save it to go to college, i do think it should be cheaper to go to college. it would make it more expensive if it was paid for by taxes because more people would be going to college. I know people at my college who kept on going to college to avoid life. they dont want to have to work and their parents are willing to pay for it. If it was all paid for by taxes the tax payer doesn't have the option of not allowing this person to go to school. it should be a privilege to go to college. I would also be paying for all the amenities colleges have like football fields and gyms, right now i only pay for the ones i can use the college i go to, if it was taken out of taxes people are paying for things they do not get to use.

Nothing is free somebody pays . I think up to grade 12 yes after that not by the tax payers. That's my opinion. But I think there's a lot of waste in the spending of tax payers money. Many programs I don't want to pay for.
@Repete yea that is the main reason I would not want to support it. ever if it was cheaper then individuals paying.

There are definitely two sides to this debate.

1) Expensive university programs disparately discriminate against those with less means. By doing so, a lot of society's talent never gets realized. So, in theory, society would be better off if higher education were available to a wider audience.

2) On the other hand, every time government subsidizes something, utilization goes up and quality goes down. This can be seen in example after example. Would a government funded and regulated Harvard education be as good as the Harvard education of today? Likely not.

Thomas Jefferson started free public education which is the heart and soul of the US. Make it inaccessible and oppression is close behind.
It just isn't that simple though. Somebody always has to get paid but uneducated children feed the futures vicious cycle.
Tax money has to go to alot of places and many psychopaths at the top are not willing to give up their massive pay check and there's nothing anyone can do about it, or will do about it. We all just sit around and complain, this is why the psychos keep winning, its our own fault and that's how they see it too

This is almost a moot argument now that much of education can be found for free online. All you are paying for is a “degree.”

I think education was part of the caste system before and that system is breaking down. Technology has allowed a lot of people to make a lot of money without the degree.

I’m fine with paying taxes for education but the price of education has to stay low. All too often public sector employees and management can’t control their expenses.

I don’t know if all higher learning should be free, but I think maybe trade schools and jr college should be free, and maybe there should be some sort of free education for x amount of government service, something kind of like what the army does with the GI bill... say like the government pays for your medical school and in return you work 10 years in county or government subsidized hospitals...

Free education doesn't make it any less valuable. How would college be more expensive if more people went? Employees aren't selected by who paid what for college so I don't see how free college would have any affect on employment choices. The people that do go to college and goof around are the ones that lose, and there are less of those than the ones that are actually trying.

Anything past your basic math, English, writing, isn't necessary so high school, where people can also just good off, would be ruled out with college. Why just education? Taxes are everywhere and you're already paying for things you probably don't benefit from. There are several countries that offer free college education

@SW-User to make more profit they would create bogus courses that you would be informed are a necessity, businesses then accept those courses as new standards and you get students overwhelming themselves more than they already do while the old stuff which was all you needed becomes less valuable.
@SW-User for tax payers they would have to pay more in taxes if more people went to college. in a way they do pick who paid what for college, they look at your degree and better schools are more expensive. the reason some schooling is free is because everyone needs a basic understanding and high school is also a part of that education. people can goof off in elementary schools too but the reason we pay for those things are because it is a necessity. how is college a necessity? if we start paying for it we better start requiring it for everyone otherwise many people are paying a lot for something they do not use at all.Everyone is required to go to high school but not college.

I think college should be cheaper..
There was a time when a person could pay for state university tuition by working a partime job..
Make students loans dischargeable in bankruptcy and tuition costs would fall dramatically....
Put a time limit on it, say seven years from graduation...
I agree with you

Yes through High School, not for College.
You are making strong points. But for people to be fully engaged in society, and have as many opportunities as possible to help make the world a better place, everyone should have access to all levels of education. Perhaps tuition needs to be on a sliding scale, but no one should be turned away. I think.

I only want the k-12

You essentially answered your own question, and I'm in agreement. Work for it, pay for it. Tired of the handout society. I worked for everything I have, and there are a host of things you learn along the way when you are responsible for your own direction.

I have the impression that in European countries where college is free or very cheap, not everyone who wants to gets to go to college; the admission is competitive. Maybe some European SW’rs could tell us if that is true.

would you rather line in a place with well educated, and thus good earning people? or the ignorant and destitute

an educated population always thrives more than an ignrant one

Yes, all the way through to university.

@TheProphet If a lie, lets see your source...

@Neoerectus Look it up instead of taking bernies word.

@TheProphet No sources, its just opinion. Zero credibility. I demand sources from everyone. Demos tend to tax and spend. Reps slash (taxes) and spend. The slash makes for bigger deficits, but neither pays for the pgms. You sound like a cultist talking anti Bernie. I never mentioned him.
