Do you have to have a teaching degree to be a teacher?

I have changed my major plan, and have decided I want to major in English, and that I might want to be a teacher. Would I need to have any sort of teaching degree, or can I just do the training and have an English degree?
It depends on the state's requirements.

At a private or charter school in the states, generally no (the institutions might have their own rules). Certain states have their own alternative certification requirements that don't always require the teaching degree or allow you to work while attaining it. Getting the teaching degree will get you a much broader range of options once out and will make you more marketable in a field that is still enamored with the traditional route.

If you're in the states, you need a bachelor of arts or science in elementary or secondary education with an endorsement in english. Or, you could do your undergraduate degree in english and get your masters in teaching or education, which will include certification. Every state is different, so you'd need to check with your state's individual requirements.

Nah, teaching is teaching

You have to be certified here to be a teacher and that generally requires a degree. Takes 5 years of college to get a bachelors of education in Oklahoma.
@cherokeepatti Ok, thank you so much! Would it have to be a degree in education?

@marilynmichelle I'm not sure, you need to check your own state's requirements.
@cherokeepatti I am in Oklahoma as well, haha.

Any bachelor's will do it, although I think you need a certificate beyond that. But the bachelor's degree is crucial.

So is the certificate if you want to be able to teach! Biggest mistake I made was only getting the bachelor’s degree and not getting the teaching certificate.@CountScrofula

Depends....here in NY, you need a master's degree in education and a bachelor's degree in whate ver subject you want to teach

I’d get a teaching certificate in addition to the English degree for sure!

Depends on the state and it’s certifcation requirements.
