I Have a Warning For You
Okay. So, I have a desk with glass tops on the different sections and different levels. Lovely desk. One day, I was just standing in the doorway of my living room when I suddenly heard what sounded like a loud pop or a quiet gunshot. And this appeared right before my eyes.
So my daughter and I decided to do a little investigating; some research. This is what we discovered.

And this. [media=https://youtube.com/watch?v=qyF0XZ-Hs5Q]
I also happen to have a huge glass topped dining room table, which I feared I might have to get rid of, but then we did some extra research. There is a protective film which can be put on large windows to prevent the shatter effect. It won't stop breakage, unfortunately, but with the film applied, it won't shatter, scattering tiny shards everywhere, like into people's eyes or skin.
This explains how it protects windows. I'm thinking it might be a good idea to put it on glass tables and shelves. I'd suggest doing it on the underside because the film isn't scratch proof, so I think it might be better to have it on the side we don't put things on.
