I have had catheters many times. Sometimes I still use them when it will be hard to change diapers.

My partner works in social care and she talks about the things she comes across and by far the best option she has spoken about (in my mind) for this situation is using a Conveen sheath. Would this be an option? The thought of catheters makes me shudder.
