What’s the best way to deal with a child that hits?

I used to take care of a kid who bit herself (hands and arm) and screamed her lungs out every time she got upset. I held her hands out of the way and told her to just breathe till she settled down. It worked. Maybe it’d work for a kid who hits too. 🤷🏻♀️
