I Did Something Unexpected
In 1965, I was living with a violent bully who had a bloated ego. Dale used to call me his "dumb little orphan." The reference was to the fact that my mother was a bully as well who had tossed me out of her apartment when I tried to run to her and away from the bully boyfriend. He laughed at the fact that my own mother (apparently) did not care if I lived or died. She had her crazy reasons for doing what she did and may have, in her crazy way, been trying to protect me. But he saw me as a "dumb little orphan."
Dale loved to tell me how stupid I was. He used to intimidate me with his phony fuzzy new age "wisdom." The basic tenet of his new age philosophy was that he was wise while I was too stupid to live on my own and wouldn't ever be able to make it in any way without him.
He also told me I was "dumpy" and didn't know how to dress and had poor social skills.
So...one day, it dawned on me to ask him why a totally cool dude, a real enlightened guru of a guy, a good looking, charming, wise college grad with a big heavy duty brain like his would ever want to be with a "dumb little orphan."
His answer: "Because I feel [i]sorry[/i] for you! You're so dumb that if I put you out on the streets, you'd be dead in 20 minutes!!!"
I broke up with Dale in 1966. It took all the nerve I had because I believed him, and I didn't think I could make it on my own. However, death on the streets seemed preferable to continuing with this arrogant bully. I ran and hid from him. He'd told me he'd kill me if I left him if I hadn't died from stupidity first.
So here it is, 19 minutes later. I guess it's 19 minutes later because I've been around a while, and I'm not dead yet.
It's amazing how many college degrees a dumb little chick can accumulate in 19 minutes. I'd never realized dumb little orphans can go to universities and even win major scholarships. This dumb little orphan never got her mother to love her, but she did get a pretty decent 25 year teaching career going and even won a couple of awards for it.
Meanwhile, I've heard Dale is living out his older years in Boring, Oregon, which somehow seems very appropriate. Maybe he's got himself another dumb little orphan to kick around.
